Weight-loss surgery can be a 'life-saving' option for some patients

Although most people can lose weight the old-fashioned way through disciplined eating and regular exercise, bariatric (the treatment of obesity) surgery is an option for very overweight people who have tried everything else.

"You don't just jump into this," says Dr. Frederick Buckley Jr., F.A.C.S., who practices general, vascular and bariatric surgery in Salem. "We're the last stop, and this solution is intended to be forever."

Weight-loss surgery is not for the slightly overweight, nor is it a quick fix for people who haven't tried other methods first. To be eligible, patients must be at least 100 pounds overweight, undergo psychological and cardiac screening and commit to a new eating pattern for the rest of their lives. Insurance companies may also require them to undergo six months of physician-monitored weight loss (usually by a primary-care provider) during the year prior to surgery or their own six-month phone-monitored system, which Buckley believes is less effective than proceeding directly to what he considers "life-saving" surgery.

Britney Spears

Children crave structure and discipline which Jamie Spears is dishing out like Bruce Lee if he ran a day care for 26-years-old. I rock at metaphors:

Britney's father is not allowing her to drink alcohol, see her friends and insists that she prays in her pajamas every night. Jamie has also been encouraging his daughter to teach childrens' classes at her favorite hangout, Millennium Dance Complex.

But Britney's fighting back and plotting a return to her care-free days of acting like a batshit moron in public:

So far, Britney has been compliant with her dad's rules, but sources tell OK! that the singer is in the midst of plotting her revenge. Britney has been sending secret text messages to her former party pal and cousin Alli Sims and is reportedly working with her and Sam Lutfi to try to oust her father as her conservator.

Japan stocks dragged lower by real estate

U.S. stocks rose on Wednesday as investors shifted into defensive shares, especially drugmakers, and bargain-hunting picked up pace, but market players said Tokyo shares had risen on Wednesday in anticipation of such gains and had little energy to rise again.

"There are still a lot of questions out there about what the economy will do and whether the United States is headed for a recession or not, so it's hard to buy actively," said Takashi Ushio, head of investment strategy at Marusan Securities.

"The market is also waiting for the earnings results of large U.S. banks, which will be coming out next week."

At 0121 GMT, the benchmark Nikkei (.N225: Quote, Profile, Research) was down by 0.63 percent at 14,506.76, a loss of 92.40 points. The broader TOPIX <.TOPX) was down 0.81 percent at 1,412.81.

Pride of Place

Sayyeda Zeinab came to Egypt in the year 61 after Hijra (AH, equivalent to the year 680 on the Julian calendar) after her brother, Sayyedna Al-Hussein, was murdered in the battle of Karbalaa by the legions of the new Umayyad Caliph Al-Yazid I. She died and was buried in Cairo, where an entire district was named in her honor. To this day, the Mosque of Sayyeda Zeinab is a popular destination for Egyptians, poor and rich, in need of succor.

Sayyeda Zeinab's journey to Egypt showed the Prophet's other grandchildren and relatives that Egypt would be a safe haven for them in times of need. She had brought her nephews and nieces with her, the sons and daughters of her deceased brothers Al-Hussein and Al-Hassan, and their descendants are those who live among us today as Al-Ashraaf.

At turns feared and persecuted by those in power because of the boundless love and respect the family attracts from the masses, there are now some 70,000 officially recognized families in Egypt who can trace their lineage back to the Prophet and his descendants.

Can this shiny lip gloss slim your hips?

Rub on a lip gloss and lose weight. Sip a berry drink and look younger. Down some iced tea and burn calories. If only it were that simple.

“Always on the lips … never on the hips," promise ads for the new "Fuze Slenderize Guilt free" lip gloss. Marketed by Too Faced Cosmetics, the flavored lip gloss claims it can suppress your appetite with the same mix of minerals and ingredients found in Coca-Cola's Fuze energy fruit drinks.

As Americans continue to struggle with weight loss, marketers are getting more outlandish with their quick-fix diet claims. At least with Fuze, a blend of the minerals chromium and L-carnitine, along a hydroxycitric acide extract called Super Citrimax, the calorie conscious had to drink a full bottle of the beverage to get the promised hunger-easing metabolism boost.

Bristol Tennessee woman could face life behind bars

ABINGDON, Va. – A 30-year-old Bristol Tennessee woman could face life behind bars after entering guilty plea to robbery and other charges on Friday in Washington County, Va., Circuit Court.

Rebecca Lynn Butler pleaded guilty without an agreement to robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, credit card theft and two counts of uttering a forged check.

"You will be brought back for sentencing," Judge C. Randall Lowe told her after accepting the plea. "At that time, it appears that you are facing life plus 78 years ... eight years of that is a mandatory sentence."

She entered an "Alfred plea," meaning she is not admitting guilt but believes it to be in her best interest to enter a guilty plea.

Brit's Dad Wins Extension of Conservatorship

A man who claims to be Britney's attorney has filed a federal lawsuit claiming her civil rights have been violated, arguing that she's being kept "a prisoner" in her own home.

In addition, the suit claims that Jamie has been over-medicating Britney and has stripped her of individual rights.

Fish Oil Flounders, But Fiber Might Lower Stroke Risk

THURSDAY, Feb. 21 (HealthDay News) -- Fish oil won't help prevent a stroke, but a high-fiber diet might make a difference, say two new studies designed to assess the impact of nutrition on stroke.

"Fish oils are not as good as people claim them to be," said Dr. Craig Anderson, lead author of the fish oil study and director of the neurological and mental health division at the George Institute for International Health at the University of Sydney, in Australia.

Isn't it time to start impeachment of Bush?

We supported Musharraf in spite of his dismal record in fighting terrorists. Our ``great decider'' has an emergency teleconference and hears of the crisis in Pakistan which may threaten Afghanistan. But, let us not return to our nation's capital. The brush must be cleared and a bike ridden. And the nation's defense bill must be vetoed so there will be no lawsuits against the Iraqi government. The reality is the emperor has no clothes but his advisers compliment him on his wardrobe. May we have an impeachment hearing now?Maureen UgoliniBloomington .

Can you hear me now? Analog cellular networks shutting down next week

This weekend may finally be the perfect time to drag Grandma into your local mobile phone shop to update that brick she keeps in her purse along with the Circus Peanuts. Come Monday, the FCC is allowing cellular providers to shut down their analog networks, and most of the major players are planning to do just that. Owners of devices ranging from cell phones to home alarm systems and even in-car assistance services may be in for a rude surprise.

InfoWorld reports that both AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless, the only two major providers with nationwide AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System) analog networks, will be shutting their networks down on Monday. Even most small, rural providers appear ready to pull the plug on the deprecated technology in favor of all-digital networks.
