Winehouse Gets Visa, Too Late for Awards

Amy Winehouse's work visa was approved after all, but the State Department's change of heart Friday wasn't in time for her to make the trip to Sunday's Grammy Awards.

Instead, the rehabbing British singer will go ahead with the backup plan that was concocted while her visa was still in limbo: a live performance, via satellite, from a studio in London where she will also accept any awards that may come her way. Winehouse and her acclaimed "Back to Black" album are nominated for Grammys in six categories.

Couple married on Valentine's Day 60 years ago remains adamantly in ...

Winds had knocked the power out to the couple's Southwest Roanoke County home on Sunday, and it wasn't due to be restored until later in the week.

On Tuesday, Anne Quinley, 80, wore slacks and a fleece sweater while her 86-year-old husband, Harold, was still in his sleep clothes -- a gray sweat suit topped with a fleece robe. It was so cold you could see your breath.

He didn't feel well, though you'd never know it from his mood, which teetered between a George Burns jester and a Bing Crosby cool.

A hernia he's had for years flared up during a recent trip to Hawaii. Surgery to repair it was scheduled for today -- Valentine's Day, the couple's 60th wedding anniversary -- but the doctor postponed it when she learned that Harold also had an infection, something else he'd picked up in Hawaii.

Early birds troop to Manila cemetery

Relatives have started arriving to visit the tombs of their departed family members at the Manila North Cemetery on Sunday ahead of the All Saint's and All Soul's holidays later this week.

ABS-CBN News correspondent Zen Hernandez reported that people carrying flowers and buckets of paint began their annual exodus to the cemetery to prepare for the occasion.

Some said they chose to visit the grave of their departed family to avoid the inconvenience of the crowd on November 1 and 2.

"Gusto namin kasing i-avoid yung rush. Dito kasi pag a-uno ang daming tao (We wanted to avoid the rush. There will be plenty of people here on November 1)," said Gino Evaristo, one of the early visitors.

The Manila North Cemetery is considered the biggest cemetery in the country.

Not on Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond

An Academy Award-nominated actor and a renowned human rights activist team up to change the tragic course of history in the Sudan -- with readers' help

While Don Cheadle was filming Hotel Rwanda, a new crisis had already erupted in Darfur, in nearby Sudan. In September 2004, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell termed the atrocities being committed there "genocide" -- and yet two years later things have only gotten worse. 3.5 million Sudanese are going hungry, 2.5 million have been displaced by violence, and 400,000 have died in Darfur to date.

COOK OF THE WEEK: Pontotoc retiree pleases family with homemade ...

The goulash recipe came from a co-worker at the Bank of Pontotoc, which later became Peoples Bank and is now Renasant. Short worked at the bank 43 years before retiring in July 1996.

"Used to when I worked at the bank, about once a week we'd each make a dish and go to somebody's house to eat, so I guess I've been making goulash more than 45 years now," she said.

But that's not all Short makes. Her son, Jeff, his wife, Susan, and their 14-year-old daughter, Emily, love to come over and eat the food piled on Short's table. It might be an ordinary weeknight, but if her family is coming, she's liable to cook mashed potatoes, roast and gravy, peas, fried okra and cornbread. Another of the family's favorite meals is fried pork chops, green beans, creamed corn and fried potatoes.

Lenders Step Up Effort to Avert Foreclosures

Under the latest plan, dubbed Project Lifeline, the lenders promise to seek contact with homeowners who are 90 or more days overdue on their mortgages. In some cases, homeowners will be given the chance to "pause" their foreclosure for 30 days while lenders try to work out a way to make the loans affordable. Lenders could begin sending letters to these borrowers as soon as this week.

Homeowners wouldn't qualify for the program if they are in bankruptcy, if they already have a foreclosure date within 30 days or if the loan was for an investment or vacant property.

Unlike the plan announced in December to freeze interest rates at current levels on certain adjustable-rate loans, this latest effort is to involve all kinds of home loans, not just subprime mortgages, a higher-cost variety for people with blemished credit records or high debt in relation to income.

Curtain Call

One of the opening night leads, Asero (the choreographer), was so perfect as to foil all guesses that she was a last-minute replacement for an ailing star.

Bibby has the most impressive voice of all, but Giddings, Juran and Flynt are also excellent singers. Giddings has a fine lilting quality to his voice and a narcissistic but sweet demeanor. Juran’s Pirate King resonates humor and is most watchable for the personal touches he brings to his character. Flynt has a naturally commanding bearing that makes him less of a buffoon than is typical for his role. Their voices blend beautifully, and careful diction makes this the most clearly understandable Pirates that I have ever heard — remarkable in light of the dated language and sizable orchestra. In fact, the entire ensemble sings with refreshing tonal and rhythmic precision.

guardian of the galaxy

Suppose yourself a National Basketball Association lottery pick. Suppose further that you are blessed with a big body but are somewhat limited (Im being kind here!) in skills. Say your rookie year free throw percentage was a reeking 59%. That aint just malodorous that kind of stench from the line should trigger an OSHA investigation. The HAZMAT guys shouldve been sent in to clean up the site! Say further that you have no shot; you must be within 5 feet of the hoop to score. In plain talk: you cant hit the side of a barn with a Gatling gun even if you are inside the barn. If you were being paid kajillions of dollars, would you dedicate a few minutes each summer to honing those skills and your craft? If that question seems rhetorical, consider the career statistics of a certain overpaid NBA athlete.
