Bourbon Street 'closing' is a show in itself

We should take a little time to explain our "traditions" to them when they have a puzzled look or make erroneous statements or assumptions.

The traditional police "closing" of Bourbon St. is not a show of force, but a reminder that Mardi Gras ends when Ash Wednesday begins. And,finally, I certainly remember when our police force were not so polite in their tactics when attempting the shutdown.

American Meat Institute Calls WCRF Panel Recommendations on Meat ...

Institute Says Alarmist Messages Reflect Group's Anti-Meat Bias, Stand in Sharp Contrast to U.S. Dietary Guidelines and Plain Common Sense

WASHINGTON, Oct. 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Meat Institute (AMI) today said that World Cancer Research Fund's (WCRF) recommendations to limit red and processed meat intake to extremely low levels reflect WCRF's well-known anti-meat bias and should be met with skepticism because they oversimplify the complex issue of cancer, are not supported by the data and defy common sense.

"WCRF's conclusions are extreme, unfounded and out of step with dietary guidelines," said AMI Foundation Vice President of Scientific Affairs Randy Huffman, Ph.D. "Headlines associated with this report may give consumers another case of nutrition whiplash.

Montana musher wins Beargrease

DULUTH, Minn., Jan. 30 A Montana musher Wednesday won the 400-mile John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon across northeastern Minnesota in wind chills plunging to 40 degrees below zero.
Jason Barron, 36, of Lincoln, Mont., and his 11 dogs finished the course from Duluth, up the North Shore of Lake Superior to near the Canadian border and back in 34 hours, 43 minutes and 26 seconds, the Duluth News Tribune reported. Their effort won Barron $8,000.
Barron, his beard covered in ice, told the newspaper the trail "was tough." It was his first time in the Beargrease sled dog race. Last year, he finished eighth in Alaska's grueling Iditarod, an event once won by his father.
"My team is so tired. The hills finally took their toll on the last run," he said.
Second place went to John Stetson of Duluth in a time of 35:18:04.

Kranz: Huckabee keeps his interest in S.D.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is hanging in there as a Republican candidate for president. Never mind that he virtually has no chance of winning.

No matter your politics, you have to admire his never-say-die attitude.

Huckabee is carrying that same commitment in South Dakota.

Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, a Democratic candidate and former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, a Republican, had filed letters of intent to enter the June 3 South Dakota primary race but dropped out.

Now, Huckabee is the only one in the state who has a letter of intent to enter the state's primary, the last of the season. Huckabee got an early boost here when Gov. Mike Rounds endorsed his candidacy.

But since South Dakota ended its early primary, the state hasn't received much respect from national candidates.

Get TechWeb's RSS Feed

RSS is an Internet format that gives you a new way to quickly and easily access Web-based headlines, blurbs, and article links from a wide variety of sources. It's most often used for showing the latest headlines from online newspapers, magazines, weblogs, and vendor and technology information sites.

Using Automatic Discovery
To access an RSS feed, you need a software program known as a news aggregator or RSS reader. If you already have a news aggregator and it supports auto-discovery, you can usually add an RSS link for a given site by using your aggregator to surf the home page of that Web site.

Adding An RSS Link Manually
When auto-discovery doesn't work, the manual process is easy enough:

1. Copy the RSS feed link from the content site.

Patients want GP surgeries to open evenings and weekends

The GPs brigade would happily post their spins today as they opted out of week end working, and are paid more! Only in the UK this scandal happens. The average time I spent in my GPs surgery is about 7 mins, and can some one tell me whether it isenough to give a 'personalised' service. BMA the god father is there to look after them. I would welcome polyclinics or even scrapping GP model as it is today and adapting the French model which is the envy of the world. GPs wrongly diagnosed my problems and thanks to my persistence and a friendly consultant damage was not done. GPs never retrain or go to refresher courses, and for a long time my GP was prescribing tablets which were superseded by better ones. So much for his professionalism. GP practice is a business which works well for the GP and his spouse who is often the practice manager.
