| Schools remind parents of reduced-cost meals
Collier County's public school district is reminding parents and guardians that reduced-price breakfasts and lunches are available at each public school. The price of lunch in the elementary schools is $1.85 and in the secondary schools is $2.10. Breakfast for students at all grade levels is $1. Low-income families and those faced with difficult financial situations may be eligible to receive school meals either free or at a reduced price and their child's meal status will be confidential. To find out if a child qualifies, visit www.collier.k12.fl.us/foodservice/frlunch/ and click on the "Income Chart" link on the left side. If you qualify, print the online meal application, full in the requested information and mail the completed application to: The Department of Nutrition Services, 5775 Osceola Trail, Naples, FL 34109.

Torvalds breaks down Linux
Torvalds made his comments during a two-part interview with Jim Zemlin, CEO of the Linux Foundation. Torvalds is a Fellow at the foundation, which funds his work. He can be heard in his own words via podcast on the Linux Foundation Web site. Part 2 of the interview will be posted in early February. Torvalds also said GPLv2 remains his open source license of choice for the Linux kernel and that he would remain pragmatic on future decisions but that stance would not blind him to investigating GPLv3 under specific circumstances. He said trust is the fuel that energizing the Linux development process and commercial vendors can only establish that trust via actions not words. Torvalds said the mythical "Linux community" does not refer to one big happy open source family, but that the development process is made up a many groups some with different ideals and goals.
Kylie Minogue honoured with an OBE
Actors Leslie Phillips, known for playing the quintessential Englishman during a more than 50-year-long movie career, and Julie Walters, who has appeared in the Harry Potter films and Educating Rita, were both granted awards. In sport there was recognition for Brian Ashton, who coached the England rugby union team unexpectedly to the final of this year's World Cup, and the team's fullback Jason Robinson. Others honoured included world snooker champion John Higgins and former European 5,000 metres champion Brendan Foster. In the business world, there was a knighthood for Stuart Rose, chief executive of Marks & Spencer, who has turned around the fortunes of the well-known British retailer. In science, Ian Wilmut, a member of the team that cloned Dolly the sheep in 1997, was also rewarded with a knighthood.
