| Schools remind parents of reduced-cost meals
Collier County's public school district is reminding parents and guardians that reduced-price breakfasts and lunches are available at each public school. The price of lunch in the elementary schools is $1.85 and in the secondary schools is $2.10. Breakfast for students at all grade levels is $1. Low-income families and those faced with difficult financial situations may be eligible to receive school meals either free or at a reduced price and their child's meal status will be confidential. To find out if a child qualifies, visit www.collier.k12.fl.us/foodservice/frlunch/ and click on the "Income Chart" link on the left side. If you qualify, print the online meal application, full in the requested information and mail the completed application to: The Department of Nutrition Services, 5775 Osceola Trail, Naples, FL 34109.
Obama and McCain ride momentum; Clinton feels the pressure
If Senator Obama wins the White House, it no longer will be a House for all people. His early messages were strictly in support of Blacks for more afirmative action laws and enhanced civil rights laws in all segments of our society. It is true, he is a powerful speaker and says what some people want to hear, but voters should educate themselves about this man and his previous work, words and actions and not be fooled by his current speeches. Also, I wonder why his son (age l4) is not on the stage with him, his wife and daughters. Could Sidney be in school and not able to leave his classes???? Also, one must consider that the family live in a mansion purchased with the help of Mr. Rezko, a supporter and friend of l5 years. This man's character is not what he wants you to believe. .
More Obama substance!
Just like in Iowa, Hillary loses to Rudy and McCain but beats Romney. And just like in Iowa, Obama beats them all. Edwards doesn't run as strong in New Hampshire as in Iowa - no surprise there - but he still manages a dead heat against McCain and Giuliani and handily beats Romney. So even though Hillary is clinging to a lead at the top of the field, she's once again giving off the "unelectable" vibe in comparison to her two most serious primary challengers. [E.A.] P.S.: In light of these poll results, doesn't Dick Morris' theory--that if Obama now doesn't run he'll have done Hillary a favor by clearing the field--have a couple of holes: 1) Obama hasn't cleared Edwards out; and 2) If Obama decides not to run early next year, and Hillary's still this weak, there will be plenty of time for new challengers to jump in.

Cuban comfort food in a slow cooker
We love slow-cooker recipes that don't require us to cook anything on top of the stove. We want to throw everything into the pot, walk away and return home after a long day to a comforting, amazing dinner. The trick is knowing which types of recipes slow-cook to perfection without prior searing or sautéing. Enter today's recipe, a new take on a Cuban classic called ropa vieja. A traditional ropa vieja spends several hours on top of the stove, but the dish meets our requirements for an easy slow-cooker transformation: It's brothy, essentially a stew at heart. It's seasoned aggressively, meaning the recipe doesn't rely on a browned-beef flavor. .
Govt. braces for key security standard
The arrival of the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201 is being met with a mix of optimism and anxiety. If it works out, the standard could provide a framework for adoption outside the federal government. But more immediately, government agencies are concerned about its costs and practical implementation. The Department of Defense, the government's biggest user of smart cards, is most worried. "We expect we're going to have to make some changes," says Mary Dixon, deputy director at the department's Defense Manpower Data Center. The group has issued more than 3 million smart cards based on the older Government Smart Card Interoperability Specification (GSCIS ). In comments to NIST last December on the draft standards document, the Defense Department said FIPS 201 would force a "costly re-investment" that would "require [Department of Defense] to re-deploy desktop middleware to 2.2 million [Defense Department] computers," update 3.5 million Common Access cards and "impose an unproven solution with no supporting product." The government did not release estimated costs to pay for Bush's mandate.
Nature Made creates nutritional supplements for prescription users
For years, vitamin supplements have targeted specific users, from children's chewables to prenatal pills. Nature Made recently launched a line of supplements that address the nutritional needs of adults taking specific prescription medications, from Prilosec to Prozac. Scientific research increasingly indicates that certain medications can reduce key nutrients in the body, said Carroll Reider, a registered dietitian with Pharmavite, Nature Made's parent company. "We've been watching these studies come in for 10 to 15 years, showing that one medicine or another may deplete nutrients in users," Ms. Reider said. "In many cases, you'd have to take a bunch of individual vitamins or minerals to make up for the deficiencies." Nature Made last fall unveiled five formulations under the name Rx Essentials.
