| Huawei's 3Com Deal Flops
The news release we issued on Feb. 20, clearly states that the only action taken has been a voluntary withdrawal by Bain Capital Partners, Huawei and 3Com of the filing the parties had made to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. CFIUS granted that request. The bid for 3Com by Bain Capital and Huawei has not been withdrawn. The parties, as the news release stated, are continuing to work closely to "construct alternatives that would address CFIUS' concerns." That is a far different situation than what this article portrays. -- Kevin Flanagan, Director of Public Relations, 3Com Corporation .
My dad passes
He wondered if an endless diet of war, crime, violence and social disintegration is the best newspapers can produce. And if newspapers really are stewards of a journalism that should build community, is such diet necessary? This is a familiar debate. I contend the paper is full of good news, too. But readers tend not to focus on those elements or remember them because they are peripheral to readers' own primary concerns -- crime, the economy, war, politics. I challenged the group to audit the paper for the month of February 2008, red penciling to differentiate good news from bad and report their fuindings to the SR staff and to readers through print and this blog. I hope they take me up on it. And NIAC readers/posters are free to try that experiment, too.
9/11 Dilemma: WTC7 -- NIST/FEMA or Architectural Engineers.
FEMA finds rapid oxidation and intergranular melting on structural steel samples10. Expert corroboration from the top European Controlled Demolition professional11. Fore-knowledge of "collapse" by media, NYPD, FDNYAnd exhibited none of the characteristics of destruction by fire, i.e.1. Slow onset with large visible deformations2. Asymmetrical collapse which follows the path of least resistance (laws of conservation of momentum would cause a falling, to the side most damaged by the fires)3. Evidence of fire temperatures capable of softening steel4. High-rise steel-framed buildings with much larger, hotter, and longer lasting fires have never "collapsed".In addition, there were a couple of little to moderate (at best) fires. I say "little to moderate" fires at best because by historical standards, the fires weren’t very big.
Mothers Given Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation Give Birth To ...
When mothers are given multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMN,) they tend to give birth to children who are bigger and heavier. This is contrast to mothers given just iron and folic acid supplementation (IFA). The effect continues into the first three years of the children's lives, according to an article in the February 8 issue of The Lancet, which follows up the Lancet Series on Maternal and Child Undernutrition. While it is already known that low birthweight affects child morbidity and survival rates in developing countries, it is not always clear what effect interventions to increase birthweight can have on child health. Dr David Osrin, UCL Centre for International Health and Development, Institute of Child Health, London, UK and colleagues from Mother and Infant Research Activities, Kathmandu, Nepal, has previously investigated this issue through a randomized controlled trial in Nepal comparing 1,200 women given either IFA (a control) or MMN, a supplement with the recommended daily value of 15 vitamins and minerals, during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
Mighty mutts: Pooches small and large do their best
Rusty, a one-eyed Pomeranian, pulls a dog sled toward the finish line as owner Elizabeth Loudon coaxes him along and Kathie Hansen helps guide the sled on Saturday at an event called the Mutt Pull in Seeley Lake. The event, tied in with the weekend's Seeley Lake Sled Dog Races, was a chance for anyone to bring his or her dog to pull a sled. Photo by TOM BAUER/Missoulian .
Senate Leader's Ticklish Test in Nevada
Reid had months of practice in balancing senators' presidential aspirations, before Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware and Chris Dodd of Connecticut dropped out of the race. Now he has little choice but to stay on the sidelines in a contest that is already dividing Senate Democrats, strategists said. His two top deputies have publicly taken opposing positions, with the No. 2 whip Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois working to boost Obama, while Sen. Charles E. Schumer of New York, who heads the party's Senate campaign committee, sides with Clinton. Sen. Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont Thursday became the latest senior Democrat to enter the fray with his endorsement of Obama. Reid "wants things to work in the Senate, and his driving, operating force is, what can he do to make sure that he gets more seats in the Senate and that his senators are happy," said Jenny Backus, a Democratic consultant and former Reid aide.
The Complete Guide to iTunes Movie Rentals, Part 2
Apple's portable video strategy has come a long way since the fifth-generation iPod was released in 2005, supporting only 320 x 240 video content—roughly the equivalent of TV sets sold thirty years earlier. Today, traditional iPod and iPhone models support near-DVD quality content, while the Apple TV almost demands high-definition video. Despite the differences between its various devices, Apple has tried to remain fairly consistent with videos available from the iTunes Store: you could be assured that any video purchased from the iTunes Store would play on all of Apple's devices. While the videos didn't take advantage of the greater potential of the Apple TV, or a computer with a huge, high-resolution monitor, the choice of the 5G iPod's upgraded 640 x 480 resolution as a lowest common denominator avoided consumer confusion over whether Apple's files would play on their devices.
