Northern Beef Packers, a locally financed packing plant which says it will employ 200 initially with a potential of reaching 600 employees. Voters approved a TIF district for $8.6 in bonds. While construction is underway, the project has had problems sticking to its announced plans and schedule. It has vacillated on project managers, marketing contracts, and arrangements for disposing of its wastewater. Many community leaders who have supported the project express concern about whether the plant will become operational.

Molded Fiberglass Companies, an Ohio-based firm, will manufacture the huge blades that drive wind turbines. It was approved a TIF district at $3.5 million. When it became apparent that the developers miscalculated some infrastructure costs, they asked the city council for an additional $1 million, and were granted TIF bonds for $4.5 million.

Clinton Appoints New Campaign Manager As Obama Takes Maine

Barack Obama swept to victory in Maine last night, getting the upper hand in all the weekend contests with his rival Hillary Clinton in his bid to win the Democratic nomination for the White House.

Mr Obama won Maine by 59 percent to 41 percent with 87 percent of precincts reporting. The victory was all the more impressive, as he was down in four polls before the caucus and lost in neighbouring Massachusetts on Super Tuesday. He even won a Grammy yesterday for the audio version of his book "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts On Reclaiming The American Dream," beating two former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter in the best-spoken word album category.

Unable to blunt his advance Mrs Clinton responded by shaking up her own campaign. She replaced long time manager and friend Patti Solis Doyle, a move her campaign described as ‘a seamless transition.' The surprise announcement saw her position taken by Maggie Williams, another close confidante of Mrs Clinton.

Home Diagnostics up for incentives

The city of Fort Lauderdale has already approved a deal that would give the diabetic testing supply manufacturer the same amount of incentives. The balance of the funds would come from the state's Qualified Target Industries program.

Home Diagnostics (NASDAQ: HDIX) would create the 135 jobs over four years and must maintain each new employee for at least one year. The average salary must be at least $42,629.

"They are adding the types of jobs that we want to have in the community," said James Tarlton, president of the Broward Alliance, which worked with the company on the deal. "They are creating the knowledge base of workers that are important to building a high-tech environment here."

The county estimates the expansion would generate $837,671 in tax revenue, which would be tapped to give the company incentives.

The Sundance Diary by Dawn Keezer

Sundance is over. Well, for me at least, the festival continues through January 27th, but it was time for me to get back to Pittsburgh.

This was one of the best festivals ever for me and for the Pittsburgh region.

As I have written about earlier, this is the first time that Pittsburgh has had two major films in the festival. Both movies were shot and set here, too, which was a bonus. This provided a multitude of opportunities to talk about how great it is to shoot projects in our region. People were talking everywhere about how great our region looks on film.

I met lots of people, saw some amazing films and made some new connections, which should help us see even more work in Pittsburgh in the near future.

One last image to close the festival was of the tall blonde PIB, ordering at Starbucks in the Salt Lake City airport.

Commons clash over Scottish banknotes

In every other way, the legal tender of a banknote does not affect its use. But the Lib Dems say there have been instances when traders in England have refused Scottish notes, claiming they were not "legal tender" and this could not happen if the notes were given the same legal backing as Bank of England ones.Malcolm Bruce (Gordon) said at Commons question time: "It is high time that Scottish banknotes were legally acceptable throughout the UK."He told Mr Browne: "If dollars and euros are acceptable to traders, surely Scottish notes should be. "Will you endeavour to make sure this position is brought to an end?"The Scottish Secretary replied: "The law is that Scottish banknotes as a method of payment enjoy exactly the same status as all other methods of payment across the United Kingdom."That is not widely known but people should know that and accept that."I know some of my fellow countrymen have experienced on occasion the refusal of these banknotes.

Something must give — or will the fight be stopped?

I participated in last Saturday's Washington caucus... hundreds were there and it was overwhelmingly white but Barak Obama took 70% of the votes. This was repeated all over the state... I met long-time Republicans who had turned from that party and were happy to lend their support to Obama and his forward-looking message. I saw so many college age people there too - inspired for the first time to step up to their civic responsibilities. Anyone who can work those feats in politics-weary USA has that special something. Hillary's team waxes about experience. No single person can ever hope to be completely ready and all-knowing. Our aim is not to elect a competent manager in November but a leader. Obama is one of that rare breed. A leader.
