| PLBuyer: Nutritional Scoring Tool Introduced - and Challenged
Topco Associates has come out with a new nutritional new scoring system, the Overall Nutritional Quality Index (ONQI), that uses a numeric score to rate any food item or recipe. The rating system uses a complex algorithm that incorporates nearly 30 nutrient factors and expresses them via a scoring scale of 1 to 100. What do you think of the simplicity of QNQI's 1-100 'at-a-glance' scoring system? Is it healthy or unhealthy for the grocery industry that so many nutritional scoring systems are being developed? Past not a factor
Players who are healthy, including senior all-stater Ben Gillen and Brian Thompson will have a large say in how tonight's game plays out."We have to come out under control and not force anything early," Gillen said while taking time out of a drill at Thursday's practice. "We have to take care of the ball early and not have any dumb turnovers. .
Senate Caves into Pressure - Won't Block Immunity for Illegal Spying
Washington, D.C. - Despite the strong leadership of senators like Chris Dodd and Russ Feingold, the Senate failed today to block provisions of a pending surveillance bill that would grant immunity to phone companies that assisted the government in illegal electronic surveillance. The Dodd-Feingold amendment to remove immunity from the FISA Amendments Act (FAA) failed in a 31 to 67 vote, and final Senate passage of the FAA is expected later today. "Immunity for telecom giants that secretly assisted in the NSA's warrantless surveillance undermines the rule of law and the privacy of every American," said EFF Senior Staff Attorney Kevin Bankston. "Congress should let the courts do their job instead of helping the administration and the phone companies avoid accountability for a half decade of illegal domestic spying." After the Senate passes the FAA, it will need to negotiate with the House over differences between the FAA and the RESTORE Act, the House's own surveillance bill passed in November.
Will 'Stunt Pizzas' Crash Your Diet?
It's happened to all of us at one time or another: It's pizza night, and you find yourself bored with pizza. You've had every crust type available with every conceivable combination of toppings, and you're just flat bored. This is when the stunt pizzas find their way onto your family menu. You know the ones, the "limited time only" culinary experiments that the pizza chains trot out periodically to liven up their menu boards, drive sales and annoy the heck out of the cooks. .
Update On Jungle Yellow Fever (JYF) In Brazil, Paraguay, And Argentina
Yellow fever is a zoonosis of the tropical regions of South America and Africa, which occurs in two distinct epidemiologic cycles: jungle and urban. In the jungle cycle, the virus spreads among monkeys and humans, who may be infected when they enter the jungle and are bitten by mosquitoes infected with the yellow fever virus. Urban yellow fever has long been eradicated from the Americas, with the last cases occurring in Brazil in 1942. Since the 1970s, the area where jungle yellow fever (JYF) cases have occurred has been restricted to the northern region of the South American continent. From 1985 to December 2007, 3,837 cases of JYF have been reported, with 2,229 deaths. In 2007 and the beginning of 2008, Brazil reported an intense and extensive epizootic of Jungle Yellow Fever in an area encompassing 6 states (Goiás, the Federal District, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Tocantins, and São Paulo).
Waterfall time is so delightful, let it flow, let it flow, let it flow
If you've waffled or faltered on your New Year's resolutions, one of the best ways to restart the year in February is to venture off to one of the region's gorgeous waterfalls. Throughout the Bay Area, the recent storms have turned waterfalls into a spectacular array of freefalls, cascades, chutes, stair-steps and cataracts. In Marin, near Carson, Alpine Dam and Cataract falls, it has rained 32 inches this year compared with only 15 at the same time a year ago. In the Santa Cruz Mountains at Big Basin Redwoods, near Berry Creek, Silver, Golden and Sempervirens falls, it has rained 36 inches this year versus 21 last year at this time. In the more arid East Bay, at Rose Peak in the Ohlone Wilderness near Murietta Falls, it has rained 12 inches this winter, compared with 7.78 last year.
Max, a beagle's beagle
But the judge never picks him, and he winds up back in the Westminster doghouse. Snoopy has reason to believe this time. Ben Walker of The Associated Press. The picture on Sunday's Boston Globe sports page caught my eye a beagle padding down the runway with his tongue hanging out. It was Uno, who had emerged as a favorite at the Westminster Kennel Club's dog show. History was against him; a beagle never had won Best in Show in the 100 years of the event. The article described Uno as, "a tri-colored package of personality who loves to chew a stuffed frog toy. Barking and baying, he hopes to make noise and become the first beagle to win best in show at America's No.1 dog event." The story pulled my heartstrings. Those of you who were regular readers of my column between 2001 and 2006 will remember our beagle, Max.
