Finding ingenious design in nature

Interview with John Byrne Cooke

[I continue my series of interviews with some of the most interesting thinkers of our time with John Byrne Cooke. Mr. Cooke wrote the book on the subject of the history of reporting of America's wars from the Revolution to the so-called war on terror and how the press has interacted with government efforts aimed at suppressing or censoring it over the course of our history. The full interview follows below, after the jump, and is also cross-posted at the talking dog. As always, thanks to Joe and Team TMV for the opportunity to present these interviews here.]

John Byrne Cooke, a graduate of Harvard College and son of legendary journalist Alistair Cooke, is the author of a number of historical novels, articles and other media. His latest book is Reporting the War: Freedom of the Press from the American Revolution to the War on Terrorism.

Eat, drink and be Melbourne

The annual Melbourne Food & Wine Festival kicked off on Friday with talk, tastes, tours and objets d'art, and will continue until March 8 when (for $45) mad hatters and others will be able to dress up and eat cucumber sandwiches and cupcakes at an Alice in Wonderland tea party at Madame Brussels in Bourke Street.

The highlight of the festival will be the Langham Hotel's program of masterclasses next weekend, March 1-2. There are still some places left but they won't last. The festival's PR chief Ellie Rowland says the number of participants depends on various room sizes; they can accommodate 70 to 200. Some classes, such as the Greek chefs and France's Generation C chef Gilles Choukroun, which will be conducted in French, are booked out. But there still are enticing insider's perspectives to be had.

Healing Our World: Weekly Comment

But along with those awarenesses were other thoughts as I saw all the boats in the water, the sickly looking birds all around, the murky, soupy water below, all the trash at my feet and the large industrial ships going to and fro.

The water was so lovely. But I know that it is terribly poisoned. Earlier in the day, I saw children swimming in Seattles Green Lake, a dead body of water with no fresh inflow. I desperately wanted to tell them to get out, that they could get sick. But I didn't.

I've been told before not to be so negative. People don't always want to hear about the darkness. It is frightening to contemplate. Acknowledging the darkness also means that you must take personal responsibility for your contribution to the problem. In order to do this, you will have to drive less, fly less, eat differently and consume less.

If someone broke into my home and I knew I hadn't done anything wrong, I would shoot first and ask questions later. The police should have had more evidence than "an unnamed" source before they broke into the boys house. We have become a police state where the police can do as they please and not have to answer for it. I'm sorry for the officer's family but I blame the death on his department, not the young man who was awakened by and Unknown intruder. Teresa, Chesapeake

-People need to realize that the police were not simply knocking down a random door for no good reason. His door was broken down because he WAS doing something wrong previously and they were there to try and put a stop to it. To believe his teary-eyed tales of total and complete innocence of anything is a waste.

Hands down, it's the law

That's a real challenge for me, thinking I might lose that opportunity to do something I enjoy, but I feel very strongly about what's happening."

Nine other Austin teachers have protested the new law in letters to the governor and state lawmakers.

State officials who pushed the fingerprinting as part of a new criminal-history law urge campus critics to cooperate.

"We have an obligation to give children safety when they're at school," said state Sen. Florence Shapiro, R-Plano. "It is mind-boggling to me that we have people thinking that this is not an important element."

The school-safety effort grew out of worries over teachers who had been arrested on suspicion of fondling or having sex with children.

Texas has required fingerprints and background checks for all new teachers since 2003, but teaching veterans and other school employees have been off the hook.

FDA issues ANPRM to revise mandatory nutrients

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) in the Federal Register, Docket No. 2006N-0168, titled Food Labeling: Revision of Reference Values and Mandatory Nutrients.

The ANPRM requests comments on what new reference values the agency should use to calculate the percent daily value (DV) in the Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts labels and what factors the agency should consider in establishing such new reference values.

In addition, FDA requests comments on whether it should require that certain nutrients be added or removed from the Nutrition Facts and Supplemental Facts labels.

Current rules concerning DV have been in effect since 1993. Those rules were developed on diet and health information that was current at the time.
